Soul Food Recipes: Recession Forcing More Healthier Home Cooking

The cost of eating out continues to increase as restaurant owners pass higher food cost and overhead on to cash strapped customers. With the economic outlook growing more risky by the minute, more people with a craving for southern food are turning to the many free soul food recipes available online.

Soul food, considered one of the original American foods, dates back to the time of slavery when slave owners gave the food they couldn’t or wouldn’t eat to the slaves. This food ironically turned out to be some of the healthiest foods, judged by today’s standards.

Most of the food consisted of green vegetables (known as greens), turnips, sweet potatoes, chickpeas, corn pone, and more. To survive the long and often hot work days in the sizzling sun, the black worker required food that was not only cheap in cost but filling and nutritious. Soul food provided the needed energy slaves needed to work the long hours.

Today soul food is a multi-million dollar food industry and growing. Now online sites offering free soul food recipes continue to rise. This is evidence of the growing popularity and demand for ways to cook soul food by a demanding market. Some of the more popular soul food dishes such as collard greens, black eye peas and gumbo have had a resurgence in popularity by young people, a group that had overlooked soul food for hamburgers, pizza and other fast foods.

          ]]>

Popular southern recipe desserts such as sweet potato pie, peach cobbler and sock-it-to-me cake have also grown in popularity by at-home cooks. Not only are soul food recipes growing in demand by new-school cooks, but also preparation techniques, shortcuts and time-saving kitchen tools experienced serious growth in the past six months.

Not only has the bad economy influenced more people to eat more meals at home, but the need people have for home cooked meals that are healthy and nutritious have increased. With the growing problem of obesity facing more people, along with diabetes and high blood pressure, more people are taking their health and diets into their own hands by preparing more meals at home.

More soul food lovers are taking to preparing their meals and taking them to work instead of going to a restaurant. This has been estimated to save many people hundreds of dollars a month. In addition, it’s more notorious as well.

With the popularity of video, more free soul food recipe sites are offering video demonstrations to site visitors. This adds more clarity to preparing the recipes, offering a show-and- tell element for cooks to enjoy. Indeed these soul food sites are not your grandmothers recipe sites.

Yes, with the popularity of home cooking and soul food combined, the demand for free soul food recipes will continue to grow as the economy worsens. People are constantly looking for more ways to cut their food cost. More families are finding the best way slash their food cost is to prepare more meals at home instead of paying others to prepare it at restaurants.

Hot And Cold Weather Cooking Tips

COLD WEATHER COOKING

Remember that cooking times will be extended when it’s cold, windy or wet outside. As a general rule, add around 25 minutes of cooking time for every 5 degrees below 45f.

Every time you open the lid to your grill, you lose the heat in the cooking chamber. This can add extra cooking time each time you check your meat.

During winter, move your grill to an area that is out of the wind and cold. However, NEVER operate your grill in an unventilated area!

Place an outdoor thermometer close to the area where you have your grill. It will help you keep track of the outside air temperature and help you determine how long it will take your food to cook.

When cooking in cold weather, it’s best to allow your grill to heat-up on a high temperature setting for at least 20 minutes before you place the food on the grill. You can always turn down the grill temperature when you begin cooking.

HOT WEATHER COOKING

The hotter it is outside, the faster food will cook on your grill. If you are slow cooking, consider cooking your food at a lower temperature setting.

Because food will cook faster, it’s important to use a high-quality meat thermometer or instant reading thermometer to monitor internal meat temperatures. This will help prevent over-cooking your meat and drying it out.

Even in hot weather, you still want to cook with the lid to your Traeger grill closed, to keep heat from escaping.

In hot weather, make sure you defrost meat in the refrigerator. Food-borne bacteria rapidly multiply in hot weather and can easily cause food to spoil, ruining your cookout.

Remember the safety zones for foods: above 140 degrees or below 40 degrees.

Cooked food and salads should not be left out in the heat for more than an hour. Better yet, fill a deep tray or casserole dish with ice and keep salads–particularly potato or mayonnaise-based salad–on ice.

Never use the same cutting board for cooked meat that you used to prepare raw meat, unless you’ve thoroughly washed it in hot, soapy water before using again. The same thing holds true with knives and cooking utensils.

You can keep foods hot by wrapping them in foil and then placing them in an insulated cooler with no ice. Stuff wadded-up newspaper around the foil wrapped food. This will keep your food hot for a good three-to-four hours.

If you plan to serve marinade as a sauce at the table, be sure to bring it to a boil for several minutes to kill any bacteria.

Does stir to the raw foods diet mean never intake hot food again? No, it doesn’t. Sometimes you want something hot. Hot food has always signified comfort for many of us. And on a cold, drizzly day, carrot sticks or wheatgrass juice doubtless won’t cut it for most of us.

Most raw food, like our bodies, is very perishable. When raw foods are exposed to temperatures above 118 degrees, they twitch briskly to disobey down, just as our bodies would if we had a fever that high. One of the constituents of foods which can disclose down are enzymes. Enzymes help us digest our food. Enzymes are proteins however, and they have a very given 3-dimensional configure in opening. Once they are heated much above 118 degrees, this form can change. Once enzymes are exposed to roast, they are no longer able to supply the meeting for which they were planned. Cooking foods contribute to unceasing illness, because their enzyme happy is scratched and, hence requires us to make our own enzymes to manner the food. The digestion of cooked food uses priceless metabolic enzymes to help digest your food. Digestion of cooked food load much more energy than the digestion of raw food. In general, raw food is so much more easily digested that it passes through the digestive zone in 1/2 to 1/3 of the time it takes for cooked food.

Eating enzyme-flat foods spaces a burden on your pancreas and other organs and overworks them, which eventually exhausts these organs. Many people gradually impair their pancreas and progressively drop the ability to digest their food after the days of ingesting processed foods.

Nevertheless you sure can steam and bleach foods if you want your food at slightest kindly. Use a food thermometer and cook them no senior than 118 degrees Fahrenheit. Up to this temperature, you won’t be burdened too much dent to the enzymes in food.
